One of the most excruciating experiences you can have as a journalist is losing important files that you are working on. Every journalist has that one story that’s never completed because of a major supporting file loss or a lost device with a draft and without a backup.

Whatever your field is, you will come to realise that protecting our work is just as important as creating it. And, your choice of storage can mean the difference between preserving these precious moments and losing them forever.

In this article, I share reasons why owning a separate or external storage device is always a safe option. and what to look for when choosing a drive. First, here are 4 broad qualities a good external storage device should have:

Speed and Performance: It should offer read and write speeds that support real-time editing, smooth playback of high-resolution files, and rapid backup capabilities.

Durability and Reliability: The best hard drives should feature advanced protection against environmental threats.

Capacity Evolution: The best external SSD must account for current and future storage needs. Factor in the growing resolution of images, the increasing popularity of high-frame-rate videos and the need for redundant backups. A good rule of thumb is to estimate your current annual needs and multiply by 1.5 to account for growth.

Professional Security Integration: Modern storage security goes beyond basic password protection. In an age of digital privacy concerns, securing your creative works is as crucial as capturing them. The best external hard drives incorporate multiple security layers. For example, hardware-based AES-256 encryption provides military-grade protection without performance impact.

Make sure you check this part when you are choosing an external hardware device.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Review

SanDisk‘s Extreme Portable SSD V2 is a beautiful piece of storage. With transfer speeds reaching 1050 MB/s, this NVMe-based SSD drive is built to handle large file transfers. The 1050 MB/sec read speed and 1000 MB/sec write speed might not win any awards but it is more than capable for most day-to-day requirements.

The drive’s durability features are a major selling point. Its IP55 rating means protection against dust and water splashes, while the silicon shell has absorbed numerous accidental drops without impacting performance. It also has up to 3-meter drop protection.

This means you do not have to bubble wrap this device to secure it.

Plus, at 1.76 ounces (49 grams), it is light and easy to carry. In sum, that is what every portable SSD should be: easy to carry around without the fear of damage. Compatibility shines as one of its strongest features too. The drive works flawlessly with computers and mobile devices, making it perfect for use on the go. The included USB-C and USB-A cables ensure you are ready to connect to any device.

On a painful note, the cable is too short, measuring only 6 inches. This means that you have no choice but to place the SSD next to your machine when using it. Also, it would help to see a power light indicator on it for some assurance that it is working.

The security features on this drive also deserve a special mention. Files on the San Disk Extreme Portable SSD can be password protected with 256‐bit AES hardware encryption so files can be kept absolutely private. This level of security has become increasingly important as data security has become a global concern.

Note: The capacity options that you can choose from range from 500GB to 2TB. Hence, you can decide what best fits your needs and budget. While the price per gigabyte is higher than traditional HDDs, the speed, reliability, and durability make the San Disk Extreme Portable SSD a worthy investment.

Pricing: The SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD storage device sells for about $90 (N175,000).
