Nollywood actress cum filmmaker, Omoni Oboli, has recounted how she lost a movie role over her refusal to kiss a film director.
Naija News reports that the thespian stated this during an interview with comedian AY on ‘Glasshouse show’, noting that the incident happened during an audition.
Omoni explained that the incident happened when she returned to Nigeria after taking a break to raise her kids abroad.
She said, “One director asked me to kiss him at an audition, and I couldn’t understand why he would do that. So I was like ‘is this an audition?’ and he was like ‘yeah, I just want to see’ and I said ‘sorry, I can’t do it because I didn’t see any reason I would be kissing you the director when we are not on set.
“And so I said ‘oh no sorry, I can’t.’ Guess what? I didn’t get the role that I travelled for, and I ended up travelling back without playing the role.”
‘There Is Nothing Wrong With Idris Elba Playing ‘Okonkwo’ In Things Fall Apart’
Meanwhile, Omoni Oboli has supported the casting of Hollywood actor, Idris Elba, as the lead actor in the upcoming film adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, ‘Things Fall Apart’.
The novel depicts the pre-colonial life in Igboland and the subsequent appearance of European missionaries and colonial forces in the late 19th century.
It was first brought to life as a movie in 1971 and a mini-series in 1987 with veteran Nigerian actor, Pete Edochie, playing Okonkwo, the novel’s protagonist.
Naija News learned that a new series is currently in development at A24, with Idris Elba and Gina Carter serving as executive producers under their 22Summers banner, which has sparked widespread criticism.
However, in an interview with Channels TV on Saturday, Omoni Oboli said there is nothing wrong with Elba playing the lead role since he is African.
The filmmaker added that Africans are better suited to tell their own stories.
