Amnesty International Hails Tinubu For Ordering Release Of Minors

International human rights organization, Amnesty International (AI) has appreciated President Bola Tinubu for ordering the release of minors who were tried for treason.

Amnesty International also called for a transparent investigation of the alleged starvation the minors were subjected to in Nigeria Police custody.

In a statement, on Monday, AI regretted that the minors between the ages of 12 years to 16 years were subjected to because they participated in the hunger protest in August.

It read, “Amnesty International welcomes the Nigeria president’s order for the release of the minors detained for over 93 in a notorious police facility in Abuja, for participating in peaceful protest.

“President Bola Tinubu must also order a transparent investigation of the alleged deliberate starvation of the minors as a result of detention in a deplorable condition, with deprivation of food and other basic needs, that put their physical and mental health at grave danger.

“The ill-treatments the minors were subjected to – solely for exercising the right to peaceful protest – exposes a deliberate strategy to crush the vibrant spirit of the country’s youth and stop them from demanding accountability, freedom and human rights.

Naija News reported that President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate release of the minors on Monday.

According to a statement from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, ” committee has been set up to look at the issues surrounding their arrest, detention and release. All the law enforcement agents related to the case will be investigated and anyone found wanting will be brought to book”.
