Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has blamed his team’s inability to score a second goal for their 1-1 draw with lowly-rated Twente at Old Trafford on Wednesday, September 25.
After taking the lead in the first half with a powerful goal from Christian Eriksen, coach Erik ten Hag’s United failed to capitalize on their subsequent goalscoring opportunities.
Ten Hag mentioned in an interview with TNT Sports that maintaining consistency and keeping up the pressure was crucial when leading 1-0. According to the Dutch tactician, the team’s inability to extend their lead allowed Twente to get back into the game.
However, United’s performance dropped in the second half, resulting in Twente equalizing and gaining more confidence.
Ten Hag expressed regret that his boys allowed Twente to capitalize on a mistake they made in the game.
“We kept them alive, 1-0 up, controlling the game you have to be consistent and keep going”, Erik ten Hag said.
“In the second half, we dropped the level and gave the goal away.
“We didn’t finish it off; we had to go for the second goal, and so they stayed alive, and we got punished with a mistake from ourselves.”
Manchester United will return to action when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on September 29. Their next opponent in the Europa League is Porto. The clash will take place in Portugal on October 3.
