FG Upgrades Mohammadu Buhari Airport To International Status

The Federal Government has announced that the Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri will soon operate as an international airport, with full international flights scheduled to commence on January 1, 2025.

This development was shared by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a visit by Borno State Governor, Babagana Umar Zulum to the ministry’s office in Abuja.

Keyamo underscored the North East’s strategic significance, especially Borno State, as a critical trade gateway connecting Nigeria with neighboring countries.

He remarked, “Establishing an international airport in Maiduguri is strategic for receiving international flights, especially from the Middle East. The airport has the capacity, size, population, and infrastructure to support its new status.”

He added that this upgrade would help unlock Borno State’s economic potential, boosting growth and revitalizing the North East region’s economy.

Governor Zulum, also the Chairman of the North East Governors Forum, praised this upgrade, acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Keyamo, and the aviation sector’s leadership in achieving this milestone.

Zulum assured the government of unwavering support from North East governors to ensure efficient airport operations.

The services in the aviation sector have improved, particularly in terms of safety and development, and anyone can attest to that,” Zulum stated, while urging the government to accelerate efforts to establish a national carrier that can better serve the needs of Nigerians.
