Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) Chairman, Hajji Olawale Liameed Gafar, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Flying Eagles of Nigeria following their impressive qualification for the semi-finals of the ongoing WAFU B U20 Championship.
The team, managed by Ali Zubair, secured their place in the final four with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Cote d’Ivoire in Lome.
The match showcased a fierce competition, with Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso all finishing with three points each in Group B. However, it was Nigeria’s superior goal difference that allowed them to advance.
The first half of the match ended in a stalemate, but the Ivorians broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Just when it seemed Nigeria was on the brink of defeat, winger Clinton Jephta equalized shortly after, energizing the squad.
The winning goal came from Kparobo Arierhi, who, after passing a late fitness test, sealed the victory and secured a place in the semi-finals against Niger Republic.
In a statement from the LSFA Media, Hajji Gafar commended the resilience and fighting spirit displayed by the Flying Eagles.
“On behalf of the LSFA, I congratulate you for fighting hard and showing resilience against Cote d’Ivoire,” he stated. He encouraged the team to stay focused and committed as they prepare for their next challenge.
“This victory is important for us. I’m impressed with the spirit shown by the boys this afternoon. Even after going a goal down, they rallied back and won the game. It shows their fighting spirit and courage.”
Gafar also emphasized the need for continued support from fans and stakeholders, highlighting the team’s potential.
“The boys proved that our nation remains a formidable force in football. I have no doubt that they will remain committed as Nigerians desire to see them return home with the coveted trophy.”
As the Flying Eagles gear up to face Niger Republic in Saturday’s semi-final, hopes are high for a triumphant run toward glory.
