The Niger State House of Assembly has sounded the alarm over the takeover of a major military training camp by bandits in Kontagora.

Located in the Nagwamase military cantonment, the camp serves as a key training ground for the Nigerian Army’s artillery corps and spans vast land areas extending from Kontagora to parts of Mariga Local Government.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Abdullahi Isah, the representative for Kontagora II State Constituency, raised a motion of urgent public importance, revealing that bandits have now occupied the once-secure military camp and established at least eight camps within the area.

This incursion has reportedly forced residents from over 23 nearby farming communities to flee due to relentless attacks.

“This military camp, now overtaken by bandits, has created a severe security crisis, with both Kontagora and Mariga local governments affected,” Isah stated.

He noted that communities surrounding the camp have faced escalated attacks in recent weeks, with some residents abducted and still held captive by the gunmen.

The Niger State legislators have called on the state government to collaborate urgently with military authorities to reclaim the training facility, allowing displaced residents to return to their homes.

The assembly emphasized the need for robust military support to secure the area and restore peace to the affected communities.
