The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed a report that its candidate, Olumide Akpata, in the Edo State gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024, has stepped down to support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Naija News reports that the spokesperson of the LP presidential campaign council in the 2023 election, Yunusa Tanko, shared the purported statement via his X handle on Friday.
In the statement, Akpata allegedly declared support for Ighodalo and asked his supporters to do likewise.
The statement further disclosed that Akpata reportedly withdrew from the election after due consultation with LP stakeholders and collapsed his entire structure for Ighodalo.
However, Tanko, via his social media page, described the statement as fake news and the public should disregard it.
The LP chieftain also pointed out certain discrepancies in the statement, adding it is a ploy to steal the votes of the electorates.
He wrote, “Fake News! Fake News!! Fake News!!!
“They are used to stealing the people votes. The letter was unintelligentlly written ……. The letter was written on the 20th of September and signed on 29th of July. Every Day for the thief one day for the owner of the House.”
