Police Deploy 8,000 Officers For Plateau LG Election

The Plateau State Police Command has announced the deployment of more than 8,000 personnel to ensure security during the local government elections across the state’s 17 local government areas.

Naija News reports that the Plateau local government election is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9.

Hours into the exercise, the spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Alabo Alfred, announced on Tuesday at the command headquarters while overseeing the deployment of officers to the various local government areas, that officers would reach their designated polling units promptly to facilitate a seamless electoral process.

He further stated that the police are dedicated to upholding law and order, ensuring the safety of voters, and preventing any possible disturbances.

“To achieve this, the police have strategic plans in place, including deploying sufficient personnel to polling units and establishing communication networks for real-time situation monitoring,” he said.

The police mouthpiece further warned individuals planning to cause trouble to desist from doing so, saying the police would not tolerate electoral violence.

Naija News recalls that a total of 11 political parties entered into a peace agreement to promote a violence-free and equitable electoral process in the forthcoming local government election in Plateau State.

The Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA) facilitated the peace accord in partnership with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).

During the event, Julie Sanda, the Director General of the PPBA, stated that the primary goal of the peace agreement is to encourage political parties and their supporters to engage in peaceful conduct before, during, and after the election.

She said, “This platform provides our commitment to peace and principles of democracy. The Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA) in collaboration with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) as well as other stakeholders remain committed to implementing proactive measures in preventing violence at every state of the electoral process in the state. This includes, promoting peace, facilitating dialogue and ensure the process is transparent.”
