A confrontation erupted in Kebbi State’s Ngaski Local Government Area when Mining Marshals, a specialized Nigerian unit focused on curbing illegal mining, clashed with military personnel and police officers.
The security forces reportedly claimed they were there to protect Chinese nationals who were allegedly exploiting lithium illegally at the Libata mining site, according to SaharaReporters.
The Mining Marshals, launched by the Nigerian government through Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr. Dele Alake and Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, in partnership with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were deployed as part of a broader strategy to combat illegal mining nationwide.
Commander Attah Onoja, who led the marshals, stated that they encountered resistance from the security personnel despite having official clearance to proceed with the arrests.
To prevent an escalation, Onoja ordered a retreat, though he emphasized that legal steps would be taken to uphold the rule of law and ensure that only licensed operators conduct mining in Nigeria.
The marshals had received intelligence that the miners on-site lacked the necessary licenses.
Upon arrival, they found vehicles owned by a Chinese state company, adding to suspicions of unlicensed activity.
While the marshals temporarily withdrew, Onoja reaffirmed their commitment to regulate mining and protect Nigeria’s mineral resources.
