The former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, has dismissed claims that his recent appointment as a special adviser to President Bola Tinubu represents a “downgrade.”

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Dare emphasized that his new position is a “call to national service.”

Dare, who served as Minister of Sports and Youth Development from 2019 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, was appointed on October 23 by Tinubu as a special adviser on public communication and orientation. This role places him under the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

In response to the public perception that moving from a ministerial role to a special advisory position is a step down, Dare asserted, “It’s not about titles or ranks; it’s about serving the nation. President Tinubu has the authority to summon anyone to contribute toward his administration’s goals.”

“It is not a downgrade. It is a call to national service. I think President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can summon anyone to play a critical role.

“It is a call to duty and to help in the effective administration of this country at a time like this when we are going through reforms that are necessary.

“When you look at the past, you see presidents call on Nigerians to come and play particular roles.

“It is a non-issue. What is important is that the president reposed trust in me and be part of what he is doing. That for me, it is the most critical.”
